Located in the heart of Birmingham’s Avondale neighborhood, The Rougaroux offers an authentic Cajun dining experience that transports you straight to the vibrant streets of New Orleans. This cozy restaurant is a treasure trove of classic Cajun flavors, captured beautifully through their thoughtfully crafted menu and lively atmosphere.
The Rougaroux specializes in traditional Cajun and Creole dishes, with a shining spotlight on their signature Po' Boys. From the crispy Fried Shrimp Po' Boy to the indulgently saucy Oysters Rockefeller Po' Boy and the smoky depth of the Smoked Chicken Po' Boy, each sandwich is a celebration of texture and bold, savory flavors. Their Debris Po' Boy and BBQ Shrimp Po' Boy bring a unique twist, packed with rich, slow-cooked goodness that coats every bite with southern comfort.
Seafood lovers will find themselves enchanted by dishes such as the Shrimp and Andouille Gumbo—a hearty, fragrant bowl steeped with the holy trinity of Cajun seasoning—while the Crab Cakes and Viet Cajun Seafood Po' Boy offer fresh, vibrant takes on coastal cuisine. And no meal here would be complete without indulging in the sweet, velvety Bread Pudding, a perfect balance of comfort and decadence to finish your visit on a high note.
Guests often highlight the inviting atmosphere of The Rougaroux, describing it as a “spookycute” space that captures a lively New Orleans vibe—eclectic, fun, and rich with character. Whether you’re drawn in by the colorful decor or the warm southern hospitality, the ambiance makes every meal memorable. Reviewers like Jessica rave that every bite is "to die for," and that the entire experience is “worth going out of your way to get there.”
The drink selection complements the robust menu with precision. From quality spirits like Tito’s, Templeton Rye, and Jameson to expertly crafted cocktails such as the house-famous Sazerac and a delightful Bloody Mary—which guests agree is “topshelf”—there’s an option to suit every palate. The spirited menu pairs beautifully with the rich, smoky flavors of the food, rounding out a meal that excites every sense.
Side dishes such as the creamy Creole Potato Salad, perfectly seasoned Red Beans and Rice, and crunchy, salty Zapp’s Potato Chips add satisfying contrast and texture to the main courses. And the strong, flavorful iced tea is frequently praised for its refreshing balance against the spices and herbs that define the cuisine.
Several visitors mention the excellent value of both food and service, with Chase calling it “10/10 all around” for the combination of atmosphere and quality — a sentiment echoed by Jason, who appreciated the authentic flavors that reminded him of frequent visits to New Orleans. Harold affirms the homemade authenticity of the dishes, especially praising the "flavorful and homemade" boudin as a standout comfort food.
For those seeking a spirited, flavor-packed journey into Cajun cuisine right in Birmingham, The Rougaroux is a must-visit. Its genuine connection to New Orleans culinary culture, combined with standout dishes and an inviting atmosphere, creates a dining experience that resonates long after you leave the table.

If you're looking for a truly exceptional dining experience, look no further! This place is definitely worth going out of your way to get there. Everything on the menu sounds incredible, and what we tried yesterday was to die for (and trust me, that's not an exaggeration!). My husband and I thoroughly enjoyed our meals. We'll definitely be back! Plus the decor is too spooky-cute!
This place is a lot to take in, stuff is everywhere and it's a great NOLA vibe! I had potato salad, shrimp and andouille sausage gumbo which was delicious! The iced tea is a good strong flavor. I would definitely drive around the twisty winding roads of the Avondale neighborhood to eat there again! I went on a Wednesday about 5:30 and it was not too busy, plenty of parking around back.
We got the recommendation from a local couple while at Leon Bridges show last night.. Great spot and we enjoyed our Blackened shrimp poboy, fried shrimp poboy & shrimp and andouille gumbo… The boudin was just ok for me, in comparison.. I like a bit more seasoning in my rice, but it was still good and It still didn’t have a chance.. That being said, I also have family in New Orleans and visit 20+ times a year! Keep up the great work! I know why we got the recommendations!!
10/10 all around food, service, and atmosphere. It was my first time there. I got the Ferdi Special recommended by my Uncle and it did not disappoint. Creole Fries were also very good.
If you are looking for an authentic slice of the Big Easy while in the Magic City, look no further. The gumbo is good and even when made with bay shrimp, the flavors of the trinity are detectable by the third spoonful. The Boudin is flavorful and homemade. Much better than store bought. The top-shelf bloody Mary is the perfect brunch cocktail. So, when you're hungry in your Subaru, you can do much worse than Rougaroux. They have sandwiches, they have stew. Serving all, even loupgaroux.
The food was fantastic. The decorations are cool. I had the surf n turf and a boudin link. Both were very good. The roast beef was tender, and the Shrimp was fried well, and crispy. The sauce on the surface n turf po boy was delicious as well. Some coworkers said their gumbo was the best they had ever eaten. The pecan bread pudding for dessert was an excellent dish! Cool vibe, great food, go out of your way to eat here.
Really enjoyed this restaurant. Friendly staff. First time visiting and they recommended so interesting dishes. Chicken was very flavorful and tender. Atmosphere was very relaxing. Found a table on the inside near the corner. Not a very big restaurant on the inside but it feels very cozy. Would definitely visit again when I am in Birmingham.
